Election Priorities

Confusion and troubles ravage our society. Like a rat infested ship, we are being ruthlessly tossed on an angry sea by our own sin. The peaceful friendly shore is in sight, but instead of moving toward it we are moving further to sea. We have lost all sense of direction. The furious waves are of our own making, and moving away from the stable shore has been our own choice. We have followed, and continue to follow the wrong advice. As long as we look to politics for answers to the problems in which we have become mired, we will find no answers. Electing new political leaders or reelecting the current ones will neither get the rats off the ship, calm the waves, nor bring us to a happy shore.

Our economic woes are the fallout of years of selfish materialism, greed, and sloth. The hideous crimes we see today are but the fruit of a nation that has lost its moral fiber. But a nation does not become greedy, the individual does. A society does not become immoral, the individuals do. A culture does not lose its sense of values, its people do. If we are to rescue our ship of state, we must rescue it one person at a time.

The consecrated Christian holds the answer for our troubled society. That believer cannot calm the sea, but he can stand on the firm Rock of Ages and pull struggling, sinking people to shore. The Bible word for this rescue is "saved." Only as individuals come to a knowledge of and love for Jesus Christ, will they seek to please Him. When they seek to please Him they will become like Him. When they become like Him they cast from their lives the evils that are destroying our society. When enough lives exchange those evils for Biblical values our society will change. Then we will become productive and conscious of needs other than our own. Then justice and goodness will again rule in our land.

Political agendas and social gospels have not achieved the Utopias they have sought. They never can. Only when we who know Christ become obsessed with fulfilling the great commission fully, is there hope for a better society. A better society will come when there are better people, and better people come only through the new birth. This is all a byproduct of salvation from sin through the shed blood of Christ. Dear friends, let us be the ones who stand firmly on the Rock of Ages and pull struggling sinners to the safe haven of Christ's shed blood. In this election year, let us elect to persuade people to be saved. "The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise."
